Based in an old police station, in the small Valleys town of Nelson
(Map), Sergeants has a warm and welcoming atmosphere upon arrival.
Sipping pre-dinner drinks in the bar adjacent to the restaurant we made our choices from the extensive and appetising menu. After about 20 minutes we made our way to the adjacent restaurant. Although full the restaurant didn’t feel over-crowded. The atmosphere was cosy, relaxed and convivial.
For starters my dining partners had chosen Thai Fishcakes, Glamorgan Sausages (made from leeks, onions and cheese, for those not in the know) and I had chosen the Welsh style Stuffed Mushrooms. These were all very tasty and we especially liked the unusual home-made chutneys which accompanied some of the dishes.
For main course we had Port and Redcurrent Welsh Lamb, Duck Breast with Black Cherry sauce, Broccoli and Stilton bake and a succulent Boeuf Gendarmerie. It’s difficult to escape the Police theme! For the more traditional palette the menu also provided a range of grills and steaks.
I was seriously tempted by Sergeant’s Boozy Bread and Butter pudding but erred on the side of caution!
After coffees at the table we retired to the bar where we found most of the other diners enjoying a friendly chat and drink with the staff and chef.
